School Highlight: Pershing East Magnet School

The week's iOS Support Team shout out goes to the faculty, staff and students at Pershing East Magnet School. The students and teachers at Pershing are using their technology to look past their four walls.

The students in the middle grades are using the iPads almost daily. They were most recently with the help of the Apple Coordinator able to FaceTime a school in Nome, Alaska. The students were able to share about their climate and enjoyed meeting students from a rural area as well as the students in Alaska enjoyed meeting students from an urban location. The students recorded the session and plan to make movies with iMovie on their iPads. The students and teachers at Pershing East are going above and beyond, thinking outside the box with apps like Edmodo, Numbers, Keynote, Prezi, and interactive whiteboards. They continue to explore different apps, inspired to make the program more than just a replacement for a paper assignment.

Below are a few words from Ms. Vera, a third grade teacher at Pershing East, on how the deployment is enhancing student engagement.

"My favorite use of the iPad this year was with iMovie.  My students were doing an experiment called Ice Keeper where they had to design a contraption to hold a piece of ice and prevent it from melting.  Students took pictures of their groups creating the ice keeper, measuring the initial mass of the ice cube, showing time passing, and measuring the final mass of the ice cube.  We actually created a trailer in the superhero mode and students gave themselves name like Ice Queen and Frozen Boy.  They were very engaged in both the science work and the iMovie."

Thank you to the teachers, students, and faculty at Pershing East Magnet School for making learning a fun and new experience for their students! For more information about Pershing East click the link above.
