Understanding the Scope Tab when Distributing Apps in Jamf

The most common activity that TechCo's will perform in Jamf is app management and app distribution to iPads.

Looking back on our first 16 months of migrating devices to Jamf, the Scope tab seems to be a head scratcher for many people when deploying apps. I hope this post clears up any misunderstandings about this tab.

The Scope tab is the portion of app deployment where you decide which iPads get the app you are trying to deploy.

You can scope an app to all mobile devices at the school or to selected
deployment targets, such as a specific iPad or a specific group(s) or cart(s) of iPads.

The other section on the Scope tab is called Target Users - this section must remain at its default - Specific Users. If Target Users is changed from its default, it will cause a message to appear on the iPads receiving that app prompting the student/teacher to login with an Apple ID in order to install the app. We do not want this to happen. That is the reason we want the Target Users section to remain set to Specific Users.

Please refer to the Distributing iOS Apps section of this document for detailed steps on how to deploy every single one of your apps via Jamf.

If you have any questions, please email iPads@cps.edu or open a ticket with the Service Desk at 773-553-3925.

Intermittent Trouble with Jamf Mobile Device Apps

10/1/2018

Dear Colleagues,
Please be aware that Jamf is experiencing intermittent trouble with Mobile Device Apps. When deploying apps in Jamf, you may see a caution symbol displayed next to the app name:

Clicking on the app name will result in an error message stating that the app in no longer available in the App Store, when in fact it is. Once Jamf corrects the error, the caution symbol will disappear but the app name will appear greyed-out. Clicking on the greyed-out app name will result in a new error message claiming that the app is disabled.

If you receive these error messages, please contact the Service Desk at 773-553-3925 for assistance. You may also use the instructions below as a workaround in your Jamf site to deploy Mobile Device Apps in the interim:
  1. Click on the name of the app.
  2. Click the Edit button.
  3. Check the box next to the Enable box.
  4. Click the Save button.
  5. Click the Edit button.
  6. Deploy the app as usual using these instructions from the Jamf - App Distribution for iOS document.

We apologize for any inconvenience while ITS works with Jamf to resolve this service disruption.

Thank you,
Information & Technology Services
